Search "best hotel price tracker" and you'll get lists that all miss one question: when do you need the tracking? Before you book, tracking helps you decide when to commit. After you book, it can literally get you money back — rebook a refundable room cheaper, or claim a best-price guarantee. Most well-known tools only cover the first half.
Here's an honest comparison of the five ways people actually track hotel prices in 2026 — Google Hotels, KAYAK, Hopper, Pruvo, and our own HotelRefund — including what each one can't do.
The short answer
- Still choosing a hotel? Google Hotels or KAYAK — broad market view, free email alerts.
- Found the rate but not ready to book? Hopper's Price Freeze locks it for a fee (app only).
- Already booked and want to catch a drop? HotelRefund — free, no account, tracks your exact hotel and dates and keeps the full history public.
- You're a travel agency? Pruvo — automated post-booking repricing, but it's B2B only now.
The five trackers at a glance
| Tool | Tracks | After booking? | Requires | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Hotels | A destination search or a specific hotel; email alerts on drops | Not designed for it | Google account | Free |
| KAYAK | Saved searches and hearted hotels; email/app alerts | Not designed for it | KAYAK account | Free |
| Hopper | Watched hotels with price predictions; Price Freeze locks a rate up to 60 days | No — pre-booking only | Mobile app | Watch free; Freeze is a paid deposit |
| Pruvo | Existing reservations, rebooked automatically when the net price drops | Yes — that's the product | Travel-business account (B2B only) | Revenue share (B2B) |
| HotelRefund | Your exact hotel + dates on Agoda, checked several times a day, full public history | Yes — built for it | Nothing (email optional) | Free |
Google Hotels: best market overview before you book
Google's hotel price tracking works like its flight tracking: run a search on google.com/hotels, flip the "track prices" toggle, and Google emails you when prices for your dates drop. It started with destination-level tracking and now covers specific properties too.
Strengths: the widest rate coverage in the business, completely free, works on any device.
Limits: you need a Google account, alerts fire when Google decides a drop is significant, and the flow assumes you haven't booked yet. There's no public price history you can point to later.
KAYAK: saved searches with alerts
KAYAK's Price Alerts let you track a destination search or heart a specific hotel; alerts arrive by email or app notification, and everything is managed from one alerts page. It's a solid pre-booking tool if you already live in KAYAK's ecosystem.
Strengths: unlimited alerts, specific-hotel tracking, mature product.
Limits: account required, and like Google it's aimed at the shopping phase — not at the reservation you already hold.
Hopper: predictions and paid price locks
Hopper's Price Watch sends push notifications with a prediction — book now or wait. Its distinctive feature is Price Freeze: pay a deposit to lock a rate for up to 60 days; if the price rises, Hopper covers the difference up to a cap, and if it falls you pay the lower price.
Strengths: the only mainstream tool that lets you lock a rate without booking; predictions are genuinely useful for volatile dates.
Limits: app-only, Price Freeze costs money and doesn't reserve the room, and there's no tracking for a stay you've already booked.
Pruvo: the post-booking pioneer — now B2B only
Pruvo built the category HotelRefund lives in: monitor a reservation that's already been made and rebook the same room when the price drops. It worked well enough that Web Travel Group acquired the company — and today Pruvo serves only travel businesses (OTAs, bedbanks, agencies). Individual travelers can no longer sign up.
Strengths: fully automatic repricing at scale, for businesses.
Limits: if you're a traveler reading this, it's simply not available to you anymore.
HotelRefund: free post-booking tracking, no account
HotelRefund is our tool, so judge this section accordingly — but the design goal is easy to state. Pick a city, hotel and your exact dates; we check Agoda's rate for that stay several times a day, record every check, and keep the whole history on a public page you can bookmark or share. If you leave an email (optional), we alert you when the price changes. If the rate drops before your free-cancellation deadline, you rebook and cancel the old reservation — the only refund route that needs no argument with anyone.
Strengths: works before and after booking, no account or app, transparent public history, free.
Limits: prices come from Agoda's public rates only — it's one major OTA's view of the market, not all of them. There's no price prediction, and rebooking is something you do yourself; we don't touch your reservation.
Which one should you actually use?
- Exploring a city, flexible on hotel: Google Hotels track toggle, or a KAYAK saved search.
- Committed to one hotel, waiting for the right moment: Hopper Price Freeze (if you're fine paying to lock), or HotelRefund to watch the real rate with full history.
- Already booked, refundable rate: HotelRefund until your cancellation deadline — here's exactly what to do when it drops.
- Already booked, non-refundable: track anyway; a lower public price can fund a best-price-guarantee claim.
- Travel business: Pruvo.
These aren't rivals so much as tools for different moments. A perfectly reasonable setup: use Google to pick the hotel, then hand the reservation to HotelRefund and stop refreshing tabs.
