So "which booking site is cheapest?" has no permanent winner. A better question is: cheapest for this hotel, on these dates, right now? This guide explains why the answer keeps changing, and how to stop refreshing tabs by hand.
Why no single site is always the cheapest
Online travel agencies (OTAs) all sell rooms from the same hotels, but they don't sell them on identical terms. The price you see depends on several moving parts:
- Different contracts and commissions. Each OTA negotiates its own rate with a hotel, so the same room can carry a different starting price on each site.
- Coupons, wallet credit, and member prices. Logged-in or app-only prices, regional promotions, and loyalty wallets can quietly drop a price on one site while leaving another untouched.
- Bundling. Some sites discount a room when it's paired with a flight or shown to members, which makes a headline comparison misleading.
- Currency and taxes. Whether taxes and fees are shown upfront or at checkout changes which "cheapest" number is real.
- Timing. Rates move with demand, cancellations, and inventory — sometimes several times a day.
Put together, this means the cheapest site is genuinely a moving target. A site that wins for a beach resort in July can lose for a city hotel in November.
The five major OTAs, at a glance
This is a general orientation, not a ranking — because the ranking flips by hotel and date.
- Agoda — strong coverage in Asia-Pacific; app and member prices are common, so the in-app number is often worth checking.
- Booking.com — very large global inventory; widely used for free-cancellation rates, which makes it a useful baseline.
- Expedia — bundling and member pricing are central; rewards can shift the effective price.
- Hotels.com — part of the same group as Expedia; member pricing and reward nights are the main levers.
- Trip.com — competitive in Asia and for app users, frequently runs coupons and flash promotions.
The practical takeaway: check more than one, and don't assume your usual favorite is winning today.
The part most guides skip: the price keeps moving after you book
Here's the trap. You compare, you find a good rate, you book — and you stop looking. But the rate for your exact room and dates can keep dropping after your reservation is locked in. A flash sale, a freed-up cancellation, or a new coupon can put the same room below what you paid, on the same site or a different one.
If your rate is free-cancellation, a later drop is real money: you can rebook the cheaper rate and cancel the old one. If your rate is non-refundable, you usually can't rebook — but knowing the lower price still helps you plan smarter next time, and it's free information either way.
This is the gap a one-time comparison can't close. Comparing five tabs once tells you the cheapest price for that minute. It says nothing about the next two months until check-in.
How to actually get the lowest price
- Compare at least three OTAs for your hotel and dates, logged in, with the app open where member prices apply.
- Confirm what's included — taxes, fees, breakfast, and the cancellation policy — before you treat a number as "cheapest."
- Prefer free-cancellation rates when the gap is small. The flexibility is worth it precisely because prices move.
- Keep watching after you book. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it's where the easy savings hide.
That last step is the hard one to do by hand. Nobody re-checks five sites every day until check-in.
Where HotelRefund fits
